A loan of $1,175 helped to buy organic fertilizer.

Leonidas's story

Leonidas, 40, is married to Edita, and they live with their 2 children in a house built out of adobe. From a very young age he managed to teach himself to do farmwork, since this was the only source of support for his family. Now, after working independently for 20 years, he has decided to continue to work growing organic cocoa. Leonidas owns agricultural land, and he is growing organic cocoa on almost 70 percent of the area that he works jointly with his wife and, occasionally, his children. He really appreciates his work because he doesn't have to rely on others to perform the labor, and because he considers cocoa to be one of the best-selling products in his area. He does face some problems transporting the sacks of cocoa, but this doesn't discourage him from continuing on. This is his second loan with Kiva, and he is very grateful for the financial support that he is receiving so that he can continue with his work. He pledges to make his payments on time.

With the 3,000 Peruvian soles he requests, he will buy sacks of organic fertilizer to increase his production.
