A loan of $400 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer to cultivate a ½ acre of sweet potato, millet, and sorghum.

Maliki Group's story

Alice is a member of Maliki Group in Chwele District. She is pictured with ten One Acre Fund farmers; nine women and one man. Alice is standing on the right with her hand raised. She is requesting an input loan to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer to cultivate a ½ acre of sweet potato, millet, and sorghum. Alice joined One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2011, and is now enrolling in the Long Rains 2013 season. Alice joined One Acre Fund to grow enough food for her family and use her increased profits to send her children to school.

Alice described her harvest as good last year, but believes she can have an even better one this year. She plans to use the money that she earns from her next harvest to send her children to school and repair her home. For the 2013 Long Rains season, Alice’s group members will take input loans of ½ acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 5 acres of land.
