Muthuru Farmers Group's story

Thomas is a member of the Muthuru farmers Group in Kakamega North District. He is pictured with 25 One Acre Fund farmers, 13 women and 12 men. Thomas is standing on the right with his hand raised. He is requesting an input loan for ½ acre of sweet potato, millet, and sorghum cultivation. Thomas first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2012 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Thomas joined One Acre Fund in order to grow enough food for the family and use increased profits to send his children to school. Thomas reports that before One Acre Fund, he was able to grow about two bags of maize per each acre, but with his One Acre Fund input loan during Long Rains 2012, he harvested six bags per acre! He hopes that his profits from the 2013 Long Rains season can be used to send his children to school and perhaps invest in another business. For the 2013 Long Rains season, Thomas’s group members will take input loans of ½ acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 12.5 acres of land.
