A loan of $125 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of sweet potato, millet, and sorghum.

Hehonia Group's story

Hehonia is a group of three farmers in the Chwele District of Kenya, represented by Joseph (pictured on the right with his hand raised). The group has two women and one man. (The field officer is standing on the left of the photo.) With their loan, each member will receive farming inputs on credit, consisting of the necessary materials to plant half an acre of sweet potato, millet and sorghum. Joseph joined One Acre Fund during the Long Rains season of 2006, and is now enrolling for the Long Rains 2013 season. He applied to the fund so that he could gain access to the best input prices for hybrid seed and fertilizer.

Joseph described his harvest as good last year, but believes he can have an even better one this year. He hopes that his profits from the 2013 Long Rains season can be used to send his children to school and save for the future. In total during the season, Joseph’s group will receive 1.5 acres worth of inputs on credit.
