Lukhuna Group's story

Mary is pictured on the right with her hand raised amongst her Lukhuna Group members. The 14 of them, 9 women and 5 men, are farmers in Chwele District. Farming inputs will be delivered to her on credit consisting of the necessary materials to plant ½ acre of sweet potato, millet, and sorghum. Mary first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2011 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Mary joined One Acre Fund in order to grow enough food for the family and use increased profits to send her children to school.

Mary described her harvest as good last year, but believes she can have an even better one this year. She plans to use the money that she earns from her next harvest to send her children to school and save for the future. For the 2013 Long Rains season, Mary’s group members will take input loans of ½ acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 7 acres of land.
