A loan of $600 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of millet and sorghum.

Vumilia Group's story

Janet is a member of Vumilia Group in Kakamega North District. She is pictured with 15 One Acre Fund farmers, 13 women and two men. Janet is standing on the right with her hand raised.

She is receiving an input loan for a half acre of millet and sorghum cultivation. Janet first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2011 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Janet joined One Acre Fund in order to gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer and grow enough food for the family.

Janet reports that before One Acre Fund, she was able to grow about seven bags of maize per 3/4 acre, but with her One Acre Fund input loan during Long Rains 2012, she harvested 11 bags per 3/4 acre!

She plans to use the money that she earns from her next harvest to buy a cow and send her children to school. For the 2013 Long Rains season, Janet’s group members will take input loans of a half acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 7 1/2 acres of land.
