A loan of $550 helped to buy chickens and animal feed.

Merci Catalina's story

Merci is undertaking her second loan as a member of the La Merced communal bank. She likes the communal bank because of the camaraderie and unity that exists in the group. She lives in Santa Ana parish in Cuenca, a place that enjoys an extraordinary natural vista. Its architecture is a mix of the old and the modern, and from the parish center one can admire the city of Cuenca. Its people are friendly and courteous.

Merci is 32 years old, married, and has two children, ages 10 and 3. Her eldest child goes to school. Her husband is a bus company official and they own the house where they live.

Merci looks after her children and her home, but to help her husband to pay the household expenses she farms, and raises chickens and pigs, which she sells in her parish.

She is going to invest her new loan in the purchase of chickens and animal feed.

Her goal is to have a larger chicken-raising operation.
