Amukeni Group's story

Hellen is a member of Amukeni Group in Kakakmega North District. She is pictured with 10 One Acre Fund farmers, 6 women and 4 men. Hellen is standing on the right with her hand raised. She is receiving an input loan for ½ acre of millet and sorghum cultivation. Hellen joined One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2011, and is now enrolling in the Long Rains 2013 season. Hellen joined One Acre Fund so that she could grow enough food for the family and use increased profits to send her children to school.

Hellen reports that before One Acre Fund, she was able to grow about one bag of maize per ½ acre, but with her One Acre Fund input loan during Long Rains 2012, she harvested four bags per 1/2 acre! She plans on using future profits from the harvest to buy a cow and send her children to school. During the 2013 Long Rains season, each group member will receive ½ an acre of agricultural inputs on credit. Hellen’s group will receive 5 acres worth of inputs on credit.
