A loan of $400 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of sweet potatoes, millet, and sorghum.

St Anthony Biddi Group's story

Juma’s group has ten farmers and is located in Chwele District. Juma is pictured on the right of St Anthony Biddi Group with his hand raised. Juma is pictured amongst the 2 men and 8 women of his group. He will receive a loan to enable him to plant ½ an acre with sorghum, millet, and sweet potatoes. Juma joined One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2012, and is now enrolling in the Long Rains 2013 season. Juma joined One Acre Fund so that he could learn good farming techniques and gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer.

Prior to joining One Acre Fund, Juma was only able to harvest 5 bags of maize per ½ acre, but after joining One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2012, he was able to harvest 22 bags per ½ acre. He plans on using future profits from the harvest to send his children to school and save for the future. During the 2013 Long Rains season, each group member will receive ½ an acre of agricultural inputs on credit. Juma’s group will receive 5 acres worth of inputs on credit.
