A loan of $1,550 helped to buy organic cacao.

Bernardo's story

Bernardo, age 65, is married and has two grown children who live outside of the city. He currently lives only with his wife in an adobe house.

Bernardo buys and sells diverse products in his area. Initially he worked as a big producer of cacao and organic coffee in his area, as this was the family’s main support. Later, with the passage of the years, he chose to leave his traditional business activity to one side and to rent out his parcels of land.

He did this in order to devote himself completely to buying and selling products in his area. He buys and sells products like cacao, coffee, annatto, turmeric, and wild yams, among others. Upon seeing a new seller, he always tries to look for a considerable price for the products given that he, too, was a producer. He identifies with that work a great deal.

The season for the cacao harvest is in the coming months, and this is a good business opportunity for merchants like him. He therefore needs to have the capital for the normal performance of his work. This is his first Kiva loan, and he is very grateful for the financial support he gets in order to continue with his work.

He now needs 4,000 soles to buy organic cacao because the harvest time is nearing.
