A loan of $1,175 helped to buy organic fertilizer.

Katerin's story

Katerin is 36 years old. She is a single mother and has a small son, with whom she lives in a house made of adobe. Her main financial support is the production of organic cacao. She does this work thanks to some parcels of land that her grandparents gave her on the condition that she provide them with some financial support. As with all commercial labor, it is necessary to have working capital that allows her to invest in the various things that are needed to extract quality cacao, such as weeding and suckering the crops. She contracts with day laborers who help her to do these activities.

To supplement her income, she also has, among others, banana, orange, and breadfruit plantings. She sells these at the Sunday fair in her district's capital, succeeding in gaining income in addition to her main activity. Her long-term goal is to start building her home as well as to open a small business selling the different varieties of fruit that her land produces. This is her first Kiva loan, and she promises to make her repayments in a punctual manner. Katerin would like to have 3,000 nuevos soles to buy organic fertilizer, since this way her crops will yield good fruit.
