Furaha Group's story

Furaha is a group of 16 farmers in Teso District represented by Margaret. The group has 10 women and six men. Margaret is on the right of the photo with her hand raised. Farming inputs will be delivered to her on credit consisting of the necessary materials to plant ½ acre of sweet potatoes, millet and sorghum. Margaret first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2012 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Margaret joined One Acre Fund in order to grow enough food for the family and to use increased profits to send her children to school.

Prior to joining One Acre Fund, Margaret was only able to harvest two bags of maize per ½ acre, but after joining One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2012, she was able to harvest six bags per ½ acre. She hopes that her profits from the 2013 Long Rains season can be used to send her children to school and perhaps to buy a cow. During the 2013 Long Rains season, each group member will receive ½ an acre of agricultural inputs on credit. Margaret’s group will receive 8 acres worth of inputs on credit.
