Geoffrey is a resident of Kitale in Western Kenya, a region known for being the grain basket for the country. He is aged thirty-seven years and has been in active farming for seven successive years, milk, poultry and maize being his main produce for the local market.
Geoffrey has requested a loan of 62,400 KES from Kiva partner Juhudi Kilimo to help him buy and insure a dairy cow. He says this additional dairy cow will help boost his farming income hence improve his family's living standards as well. He plans to establish a cereals processing business in the local market to supplement his farming income.
He notes animal diseases and lack of adequate finances as the main challenges in the farming business.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
