Zyraj is from Kosovo. She lives in a Roma community, where loans have helped this area to improve their life and business. She is married and has three adult children. Her husband works as construction worker with a very low salary and Zyraj performs with a tambourine, during the summer, for wedding celebrations.

They all live under extremely poor and unhealthy conditions in a small, old house. Zyraj really wanted to have a more comfortable environment for her family. The income that they generate is not enough to support the needs of her family.

The loan she is taking will be used to buy the building materials for building another room, to expand her small house. The loan will help her family to improve their living condition. Her goal is to keep improving her home, to have more comfort and live in a pleasant environment with her family.

Zyraj really appreciates all Kiva lenders!

More information about this loan

This loan will support the economic aspirations of minority people in Kosovo. Roma people and ethnic Serbians have historically faced a tremendous amount of hardship in Kosovo, and are still socioeconomically and politically vulnerable. During the 1998-1999 war, the fighting displaced 250,000 people. Among those displaced were an estimated 80-90% of the region’s Roma population. Today, Roma and ethnic Serbians living in Kosovo still face discrimination and are excluded from many aspects of society, including fair political representation and high rates of unemployment. By supporting this loan you are helping provide opportunity to marginalized populations.
