A loan of $1,075 helped to buy manure, fertilizer, pesticide and labor.

Angel Publio's story

Angel is 43 years old and from the district of San Antonio in the outskirts of Estelí. He is married and has five children of the ages of 21, 18, 17, 16 and 11. Three are in school and the rest help him with his agricultural duties.

He began his work as a coffee grower five years ago when he was 38 years old and inherited about 3.5 acres of land from his father. He cultivated the land with coffee and at the end of three years he was receiving his first harvest. With the earnings received he bought land in which he also cultivated with coffee so that he now owns about 7 acres of coffee plants. This has been his first and only business.

With this work his family supports him. He sells his harvest to a coffee exporter. His wife is a teacher in a rural school in the district of San Antonio.

He would like to selll his product to direct buyers without an intermediary to obtain greater earnings. His expectations for his business is to expand the cultivated area, increase yield per unit area and sell his product at a better price.

The loan he requested is to buy manure, fertilizers, pesticides and pay for labor to do maintenance on his seven acres of coffee plants. His future plans are to improve his home and buy machinery and equipment to facilitate his agricultural duties.
