A loan of $50 helped to pay for 10 low-cost LED lights to resell to rural households without electricity.

Alphonse's story

Alphonse is a 47-year-old man from Rulindo District in the Northern Province of Rwanda. He is seeking a loan of $50 to purchase 10 rechargeable LED lights, which he will resell to people without electricity in his village. Every week or so, these customers will return to him to have their lights recharged for just $0.20. Alphonse started selling lights in October 2012, and he has sold 20 lights to date, providing clean energy to 100 people. With the money he makes from selling and recharging lights, he will pay the school fees for his three children (Desange, Fitina, and Merisa).
