A loan of $650 helped to buy rice, chickens, and other supplies.

Daniel Alfonso's story

The communal bank, "Guerra de los Sexos," meets every two weeks in the Picoaza parish in the city of Portoviejo. This is a place known for being a very commercial area, for its traditional festivals of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, and for the rich, historic culture that surrounds its mountains. Daniel lives here. He is 28, single, and lives in his parents' home. He is a very hard-working young man who likes to make use of his own means to get ahead. This is how he wants to build a better future and to help his parents. He makes a living making food along with another person. Every weekend, they prepare a large quantity of sandwiches and dishes for parties and events. In general, they have contracts from Friday until Sunday. They have done this work for 8 years, and it has helped him get ahead and help his parents. He will use this loan to buy rice, chickens, and other supplies to prepare food. He has been a member of the communal bank for 8 years. He likes it because he started his business with his first loan. His dream is to have a big restaurant and event center.
