A loan of $450 helped to buy wood, sawdust and soil.

María Mercedes's story

In Los Bajos Montecristi, a city known for its variety of traditional products such as toquillas, straw hats, in the country and abroad, members of the communal bank Santa Martha meet every 15 days.

Maria lives here. She is 40 years old and is in a common-law marriage. She has three children ages 17, 15 and 10, the two older children are in high school and the younger child is in elementary school. Her husband makes bricks.

Maria is a hard worker and with her husband they work in the hard labour of brick making which are used in construction. They work Monday to Saturday from 7:30am to 5:00pm. They make bricks and then deliver them to retailers who come to the site to buy from all manufactures in the area.

This loan is to purchase raw materials such as wood, sawdust and soil to make bricks. She is a founding member of the communal bank and she like it for the benefits and the meetings as she enjoys herself very much.

Her dream is to have a bigger house.
