Alafia B Group's story

Pictured here are members of the “Alafia B” group from Waterloo, a town near Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital city. They are petty-businesswomen who have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, in order to seek a loan of 3,100,000 Sierra Leonean leones for the group. With this loan, they will be able to add more goods to their respective businesses, attract more customers, make more sales and profit, and consequently improve their living conditions.

The leader of this group of entrepreneurs is Mariatu. Mariatu was born in western Sierra Leone 41 years ago. She is married and has 6 children. Her husband is a fisherman and 5 of her children are attending primary and secondary schools. Mariatu has been a businesswoman for many years now. She sells firewood and charcoal. She has requested this loan in order to buy firewood and charcoal in larger quantities to add to her current stock.
