61-year-old Gilma has dedicated her life to work in order to offer her son a better quality of life and ensure access to education for him.
After being abandoned by her husband, this woman took on all the responsibilities of the home. For this reason she worked selling fried foods outside her home. Because of the lack of opportunities, day by day she has to search hard for a living for her family, because her lack of education closed the doors to access to the world of work. With courage and effort she has managed to move her family forward.
Everyday she begins working at 4 o'clock in the morning in her workplace, selling fried foods and coffee. After that she goes home to do the housework and prepare the products that she will sell the next day.
Her greatest dream is to be able to find a premises for her business and buy a greater selection [of products] to increase sales. For this reason she is applying for a loan because she hasn't got any capital of her own to rely on to buy the raw materials and supplies (cold meats and coffee.)
This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
