Development Iii Group's story

Meet with members of the “Development III” group from Koidu, a city in eastern Sierra Leone. They are all local entrepreneurs who have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva, to apply for a loan of 500,000 SLL each. With the help of this loan they will be able to expand their businesses, make more sales and consequently improve their living conditions.

Fatmata is the featured leader of this group. The 35-year-old is married to a diamond miner and they have four children - one in primary school and three in secondary school. Fatmata has been a businesswoman for eight years, she sells market-food such as rice, onions, margi (used to give sauce a sweet taste), salt, pepper and dried fish. With her share of this loan, she will buy goods at wholesale prices to add to her current stock.
