Tadeo is a 35-year-old married man with six children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old. Five of the children attend school. Tadeo has been selling plantains since 2009. Plantains are a Ugandan delicacy, known locally as 'matooke’. In addition, he does farming to supplement his income.

He started his business in the outskirts of Kyotera, where he lives, but he buys the matooke from the neighboring villages. He would like the loan to buy more matooke, which is in high demand in the city. Once purchased, he loads it on trucks and transports it to the city where he sells it at a higher price. He dreams of having enough capital to buy matooke in bulk so he can fill an entire truck by himself and, therefore, save on transportation costs. According to interactions with colleagues, Tadeo is a very hardworking person. In the photo is Tadeo with the green plantains.

More information about this loan

This loan is part of UGAFODE's program for clients who live in isolated rural areas with limited access to financial services. Uniquely, UGAFODE focuses its efforts on agricultural areas in Uganda that are over 50 km from their branches, providing loans to both groups and individual borrowers. The organization believes that the risk of offering services to remote clients is outweighed by the benefits to customers and their often underserved communities.
