A loan of $1,175 helped cover the costs of her crop.

Adela Maritza's story

Adela is 37 years old and lives in the city of Nazca with her husband and her two children who she loves and are her reason for living. She is very friendly, hard working and enthusiastic and alongside her husband she puts all her energy into giving her family a better life. Unfortunately, due to a lack of economic resources, and out of a need to work, Adela was not able to study for a professional career. She wanted to be a nurse and she very much would have liked to have been one. In her free time, she likes to distract herself by watching television and, on occasion, she cooks a delicious meal called Tallerines Rojos to share with her family.

On her own initiative, and through hard work and dedication, Adela works in agriculture, and she has a small crop of tuna, or cactus fruit, that she uses to raise cochineal insects. She works every day for around 8 hours and believes that everything has worked out for the best because of her experience in the fields. Adela is very grateful to the lenders of Kiva because it is thanks to the help they have given her that she has been able to cover the costs of infestation, irrigation and herbicides for her crop. And so, she has been able to repopulate the cochineal population on her cactus fruit and is able to sell them for a good price. She will continue to work and strive to do her best in order to achieve her dream of giving her children a good education and a profession.
