A loan of $275 helped a member to start another business, and also buy more firewood to sell.

Biira's Group's story

Biira's group is comprised of two hard-working women. Biira is 17 years old and lives in the town of Kasese in the Fortportal region of Uganda. For the past two years, Biira has been working hard to manage her business, which deals in firewood.

To help expand her business, Biira has requested a loan of 400000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to start another business, and also buy more firewood to sell. It will help Biira to generate greater profits and lead to increased returns so she can start another business. Biira hopes that in the future she will be able to buy land.

Biira is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
