María Elena's story

María is taking out a second loan in the Pauteñitas communal bank. She lives in the beautiful community in the canton of Paute. It has a warm climate and its fertile soil is where many flowers are harvested. It's irregular geography gives beautiful landscapes where nature can be enjoyed. Its people are friendly, kind and still maintain their culture and traditions. María is 47 years old. She is married and in her marriage has had 5 children, aged 23, 22, 20, 19 and 4. Four of her children are grown. They work and help her financially. Besides working, they go to college. Her husband works as a bricklayer and they own the house they live in. María is a housewife and to help out with the family budget, she raises and sells chickens, pigs, guinea pigs and cattle. She also is a farmer and what she grows is for household consumption. She is going to invest her loan in buying chickens. Her goal is to build bigger sheds to raise chickens.
