Fighting for a better future? We need your help.

Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

A loan of $425 helped to purchase fish.

Sophie's story

Sophie is a woman of 58 years old. She is a widow and the mother of seven children, the oldest of whom is 35 years old and the youngest of whom is 17. Sophie owns and manages a stand in a district of her town where she sells smoked fish. She is requesting this loan to increase her stock of raw materials so that she can meet the demand of her growing clientele. The income Sophie earns with the help of this loan will serve to expand her business and provide for the education of her youngest child, who is still attending school.
