A loan of $1,075 helped a member to purchase hybrid seeds and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Shikunga Group's story

Alfonze’s group has 17 farmers and is located in Kakamega South District. Alfonze is pictured on the right of Shikunga Group with his hand raised. Alfonze is pictured amongst the 5 men and 12 women of his group. He will receive input loans to plant half an acre with sorghum, millet, and maize. Alfonze joined One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2011, and is now enrolling in the Long Rains 2013 season. Alfonze joined One Acre Fund so that he could gain access to hybrid seeds and fertilizer and access the best input prices.

Prior to joining One Acre Fund, Alfonze was only able to harvest five bags of maize per half acre, but after joining One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2012, he was able to harvest 12 bags per half acre! He plans to use the money that he earns from his next harvest to send his children to school. Alfonze’s group members will each receive input loans for a half acre during the 2013 Long Rains season. In total they will receive inputs for 8.5 acres of maize and sorghum.
