El Salvador
Gotera, El Salvador / Personal Housing Expenses

Rosario Del Milagro's story

Rosario is 49 years old, married and has two children. She makes items to wear such as skirts and blouses and learned the skill from relatives who also engage in this task. She has had 15 years of experience. She makes the clothing in her home. Her husband is a farmer and grows basic grains to help support the family.

Since she provides a service to her customers, they bring their fabrics to her so that she can make the garments. Thus she buys thread, buttons, zippers and other notions to make blouses, etc.. She buys these accessories in stores located in the city about 3 kilometers from her home.

She is requesting a loan from Fundación Campo to purchase 500 bricks, 50 bags of cement, 10 hundred pound weights of iron of different lengths, 1 truckload of sand and pay for the labor force. They will be used to build a kitchen because the house where she lives is built of adobe and it fills with smoke when she cooks. Thus she wants to have a kitchen built of bricks. When the new kitchen is built the family will no longer risk respiratory diseases because they will not be inhaling smoke and will be able to spend more time in the dwelling. Nowadays, when she cooks everyone has to leave the house because of the smoke.

Rosario wants to continue improving her dwelling because it is made of adobe and she wants to re-build it completely of bricks even though it may be smaller than the one that she has currently.
