A loan of $650 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Pioneer Group's story

Bernard is pictured on the right with his hand raised amongst his Pioneer Group members. The 10 of them, 7 women and 3 men, are farmers in Kakamega South District. Farming inputs will be delivered to him on credit consisting of the necessary materials to plant ½ acre of maize, millet, and sorghum. Bernard joined One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2011 season, and is now enrolling in the Long Rains 2013 season. Bernard joined One Acre Fund so that he could access the best input prices and gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer.

Bernard described his harvest as good last year, but believes he can have an even better one this year. He plans to use the money that he earns from his next harvest to send his children to school and to buy a cow. Bernard’s group members will each receive input loans of ½ acre during the 2013 Long Rains season. In total they will receive inputs for 5 acres of maize, millet and sorghum.
