A loan of $700 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet and sorghum.

Mrembo Group's story

Dunstone is a member of Mrembo Group in Kakamega South District. He is pictured as one of eleven One Acre Fund farmers, nine women and two men. Dunstone is standing on the right with his hand raised. He is receiving an input loan for ½ acre of maize, millet and sorghum cultivation. Dunstone first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2012 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Dunstone joined One Acre Fund in order to gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer and access the best input prices.

Dunstone reports that before One Acre Fund, he was able to grow about two bags of maize per ½ acre, but with his One Acre Fund input loan during Long Rains 2012, he harvested 6 1/2 bags per 1/2 acre! He hopes that his profits from the 2013 Long Rains season can be used to send his children to school and buy a pig. For the 2013 Long Rains season, Dunstone’s group members will take input loans of ½ acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 5 1/2 acres of land.
