Musembe Group's story

Patrick is a member of Musembe Group in Kakamega South District. He is pictured with 10 One Acre Fund farmers, two women and eight men. Patrick is standing on the right with his hand raised. He is receiving a loan to cultivate 1/2 an acre of maize, millet, and sorghum. Patrick joined One Acre Fund during the 2011 Long Rains season and is now enrolling in the 2013 Long Rains season. Patrick joined One Acre Fund so that he could gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer and specialize in modern production.

Patrick reports that before One Acre Fund, he was able to grow about 7 bags of maize per 1/2 acre, but with his One Acre Fund loan during Long Rains 2012, he harvested 9 bags per 1/2 acre. He plans to use the money that he earns from his next harvest to send his children to school and to save for the future. For the 2013 Long Rains season, Patrick’s group members will take loans to cultivate 1/2 acre each. In total, this group will receive loans to use on 5 acres of land.
