A loan of $1,150 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Malkia Group's story

Philice is a member of Malkia Group, in Kakamega South District. She is one of the 18 One Acre Fund farmers pictured, 10 women and 8 men. Philice is standing on the right, with her hand raised. She is receiving an input loan for ½ acre of maize, millet and sorghum cultivation. Philice is a new One Acre Fund farmer and is excited for the 2013 Long Rains season. She joined One Acre Fund in order to gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer, and to get the best input prices.

Philice managed to harvest three bags of maize on one acre of land, last year. As a One Acre Fund farmer, she hopes to harvest more. She plans to use the money that she earns from her next harvest, to send her children to school and to save for the future. For the 2013 Long Rains season, the members of Malkia Group will take input loans of ½ acre, each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on nine acres of land.
