Pamoja Group's story

Leonita is a member of Pamoja Group in Kakamega south district. She is pictured with ten One Acre Fund farmers, nine women and one man. Leonita is standing on the right with her hand raised. She is receiving an input loan for cultivating half an acre of maize, millet, and sorghum. Leonita first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2009 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Leonita joined One Acre Fund in order to gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer and to grow enough food for her family.

Prior to joining One Acre Fund, Leonita was only able to harvest three bags of maize per half acre, but after joining One Acre Fund during the Long Rains of 2009, she was able to harvest eight bags per half acre! She plans on using future profits from the harvest to send her children to school. Leonita’s group members will each receive input loans for a half acre during the 2013 Long Rains season. In total they will receive inputs for five acres of maize, millet and sorghum.
