A loan of $700 helped a member to purchase hybrid seeds and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Mapambano Group's story

Alice is a member of the Mapambano Group in Kakamega's South District. She is pictured with eleven One Acre Fund farmers: nine women and two men. Alice is standing on the right with her hand raised. She is receiving an input loan for a 1/2 acre of maize, millet, and sorghum cultivation. Alice joined One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2010 and is now enrolling in the Long Rains 2013 season. Alice joined One Acre Fund so that she could gain access to hybrid seeds and fertilizer and access the best input prices.

Alice reports that before One Acre Fund, she was able to grow about one bag of maize per 1/2 acre, but with her One Acre Fund input loan during Long Rains 2012, she harvested four bags per 1/2 acre. She plans to use the money that she earns from her next harvest to send her children to school and save for the future. During the 2013 Long Rains season, each group member will receive 1/2 an acre of agricultural inputs on credit. Alice’s group will receive 5 1/2 acres worth of inputs on credit.
