A loan of $275 helped to buy spatulas and brushes for eradicating mealy bugs.

Julio Cesar's story

Julio, who is 33, lives in Nazca, a city with a very warm climate and very beautiful and impressive tourist attractions. He is a very hardworking man who, from a very young age, learned to earn his daily bread with the sweat of his own brow, since his parents had few economic resources and he had to support them. Therefore, he was only able to study until the age of 16, although he would have liked to study Civil Engineering.

Julio works as a farm labourer every day and also has a plot of land on which he has sown tuna, a kind of cactus whose fruit is multi-coloured and very attractive. Furthermore, his plants have become infested with mealy bugs, a type of insect which lives on these types of plants and from which a kind of natural dye is obtained.

Julio believes that he is achieving success with his business because he is responsible and, above all, because he likes what he does. He is very grateful to Kiva lenders because, with the help that they provide, he can cover the costs of eradicating the mealy bugs, which involves buying special spatulas and brushes to collect them. This will enable him to grow his crops in an appropriate way and have a better harvest, so he can boost his income and continue striving to realise his greatest ambition: “to improve his quality of life".
