A loan of $650 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Inua Group's story

Crescentia is a member of Inua Group in Kakamega South District in Kenya. She is pictured with 10 One Acre Fund farmers: 8 women and 2 men. Crescentia is standing on the right with her hand raised. She is receiving an input loan for ½ an acre of maize, millet, and sorghum cultivation. Crescentia first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2010 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Crescentia joined One Acre Fund in order to gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer and to access the best input prices.

Crescentia reports that before One Acre Fund, she was able to grow about 5 bags of maize per ½ acre, but with her One Acre Fund input loan during Long Rains 2012, she harvested 10 bags per 1/2 acre. She plans to use the money that she earns from her next harvest to invest in cows and save for the future. For the 2013 Long Rains season, Crescentia’s group members will take input loans of ½ acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 5 acres of land.
