Shikulu Group's story

Protus, a member of Shikulu Group in Kakamega South District, is pictured on the right with his hand raised, one of 13 One Acre Fund farmers consisting of ten women and three men. Protus, who is receiving an input loan for ½ acre of maize, millet and sorghum cultivation, first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2006 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. He joined in order to grow enough food for the family and use increased profits to send his children to school.

Protus described his harvest last year as good, but believes he can have an even better one this year. He plans to use the money that he earns from his next harvest to send his children to school and buy a cow. For the 2013 Long Rains season, Protus’s group members will take input loans of ½ acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 6.5 acres of land.
