Mushinaka Group's story

Mushinaka is a group of 10 farmers in Kakamega south District represented by Elizabeth. The group has 5 women and 5 men. Elizabeth is on the right of the photo with her hand raised. Farming inputs will be delivered to her on credit consisting of the necessary materials to plant ½ acre of maize, millet, and sorghum. Elizabeth joined One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2011, and is now enrolling in the Long Rains 2013 season. Elizabeth joined One Acre Fund so that she could gain access to hybrid seeds and fertilizer, and because One Acre Fund has good planting time.

Prior to joining One Acre Fund, Elizabeth was only able to harvest 7 bags of maize per 1 acre, but after joining One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2012, she was able to harvest 17 bags per 1 acre! She plans to use the money that she earns from her next harvest to send her children to school and repair her home. Elizabeth’s group members will each receive input loans of ½ acre during the 2013 Long Rains season. In total they will receive inputs for 5 acres of maize, millet and sorghum.
