Mwanzo Group's story

Florence is a member of Mwanzo Group in Kakamega South District. She is pictured with eleven One Acre Fund farmers – nine women and two men. Florence is standing on the right in a blue dress. She is receiving an input loan for ½ acre of maize, millet and sorghum cultivation. Florence first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2011 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Florence joined One Acre Fund in order to produce more food to sell.

Florence reports that before One Acre Fund, she was able to grow about three bags of maize per ½ acre, but with her One Acre Fund input loan during Long Rains 2012, she harvested nine bags per 1/2 acre! She hopes that her profits from the 2013 Long Rains season can be used to send her children to school and buy a cow.

Florence’s group members will each receive input loans of ½ acre during the 2013 Long Rains season. In total, they will receive inputs for 5.5 acres of maize, millet and sorghum.
