Tumaini Group's story

Tumaini Group is located in Bungoma South District. It is a group of six women and four men led by Sylvester pictured on the right with his hand raised. He is receiving an input loan for ½ an acre of maize, millet and sorghum cultivation. Sylvester first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2012 long rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 long rains season. Sylvester joined One Acre Fund in order to gain knowledge on farming and use increased profits to send his children to school.

Prior to joining One Acre Fund, Sylvester was only able to harvest 12 bags of maize per one acre, but after joining One Acre Fund during the long rains 2012, he was able to harvest 10 bags per ½ acre. He hopes that his profits from the 2013 long rains season can be used to send his children to school and buy a plot. Sylvester’s group members will each receive input loans of ½ an acre during the 2013 long rains season. In total they will receive inputs for five acres of maize and sorghum.
