Sary, age 44 and a married mother with two children, is a rural villager originally from Thbaung Khmum district of Cambodia.

Sary and her husband do rice cultivation on one and a half hectares of farmland. This couple also works for others for a fee during their spare time to generate additional income. Involved in this business for 26 years, she is able to earn up to 15,000 KHR per day.

This is the first loan for Sary’s group, which consists of three female members. She and one of her fellow group members are seeking 1,000,000 KHR each, whereas the remaining member is applying for 300,000 KHR.

As the group leader, Sary is going to spend her loan portion on purchasing fertilizer. She hopes to gain a double yield with a high profit, so as she can improve her living standard gradually.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
