Ruth is aged 30. She is a farmer in Kitale county in Kenya, where she lives with her husband and two children, who have both started schooling. She has been in farming for the past five years, producing milk, maize, beans and eggs, which she sells at the local market in her area.
She is requesting a 52,000 KES (Kenyan shillings) loan from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow that will provide her with more milk for sale and earn her extra income, which she will use to uplift her living standards and pay for her children’s schooling. She aspires to have bought another four dairy cows in the next five years.
Diseases, fluctuation of prices and food shortages are her major challenges in farming.
She is very thankful to Juhudi Kilimo for giving her the loan.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
