A loan of $650 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Lutaso Group's story

Florence is a member of the Lutaso Group in Bungoma South District. She is pictured with 10 One Acre Fund farmers, 8 women and 2 men. Florence is standing on the right with her hand raised. She is receiving an input loan for ½ acre of maize, millet and sorghum cultivation. Florence first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2011 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Florence joined One Acre Fund in order to access the best input prices and grow enough food for her family.

Prior to joining One Acre Fund, Florence was only able to harvest ½ bag of maize per 1 acre, but after joining One Acre Fund, during the Long Rains 2012, she was able to harvest 8 bags per ½ acre! She plans on using future profits from the harvest to save for the future and perhaps invest in another business. During the 2013 Long Rains season, each group member will receive ½ an acre of agricultural inputs on credit. Florence’s group will receive 5 acres worth of inputs on credit.

Beatrice and Everlyne, members of Lutaso Group, are pictured above. However, they have already appeared on Kiva. In order to prevent the double funding of a farmer, they are pictured as members of the group, but will not receive funding from this loan.

In this group: Florence, Beatrice, Everlyne, Jane, Violet, Hellen, Gladys, Anaset, Sammy, Mary
