A loan of $600 helped a member to buy palm oil, margi and clothes in bulk to add to her business.

Gaba Group's story

Pictured here are members of the Gaba group, small businesswomen who have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, to request a loan of 500,000 Leones for each in the group. With the help of this loan, they will be able to expand their respective businesses by purchasing more inventories to add to their current ones.

Matilda, the featured leader of this group of entrepreneurs, is 37 years old, married and has two children, one of whom is attending secondary school, while the other is not of school-going age. Matilda sells palm oil (the country’s most popular cooking oil), margi (used to give sauce a sweet taste) and clothes. Matilda is going to use her share of this loan to buy more palm oil, margi and clothing in bulk to add to her business.

(Also included on the right in the photo is loan officer Sarah, posing with the borrowers).
