Samtry Group's story

Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT), a partner of Kiva.org in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, is very pleased to present to you members of the “Samtry” group. These are small-scale entrepreneurs who have come to SMT/Kiva lenders to seek a loan of 500,000 SLL (Sierra Leone leones) for each in order to invest in their respective businesses.

Hawanatu is the leader of this group. Hawanatu is 38 years old. She is married with four children – two in primary school, one in secondary school and one not yet of school-going age. Hawanatu sells market food – palm oil (the country’s most popular cooking oil), Margi (used to give sauce a sweet taste), onions, pepper, etc. She has been doing business for six years now. With her share of this loan, she is going to buy the above-mentioned items in large quantities to add to her current stock.
