A loan of $650 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Upendo Group's story

Joy’s group has ten farmers and is located in Bungoma South District. Joy is pictured on the right of Upendo Group with her hand raised. She is pictured amongst the one man and nine women of her group.

Joy will receive input loans capable of planting ½ acre with millet, sorghum, and maize. The 2013 Long Rains season will be Joy’s first season with One Acre Fund. She joined this year in order to gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer and to access the best input prices.

Last year, Joy harvested 8 bags of maize on 1 acre of land. She is excited to improve her harvest as a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. She plans on using future profits from the harvest to send her children to school and invest in a new cow.

For the 2013 Long Rains season, Joy’s group members will take input loans of ½ acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 5 acres of land.
