A loan of $650 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Umoja Group's story

Umoja Group, located in Bungoma South District, consists of nine women and one man and is led by Elizabeth, pictured on the right with her hand raised. A new One Acre Fund farmer excited for the 2013 Long Rains season, Elizabeth is receiving an input loan for ½ an acre of maize, millet and sorghum cultivation. She joined One Acre Fund in order to gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer.

Elizabeth managed to harvest five bags of maize on 1/2 acre of land last year. As a One Acre Fund farmer, she hopes to harvest even more and plans on using future profits to send her children to school and perhaps invest in another business. For the 2013 Long Rains season, Elizabeth’s group members will take input loans for ½ an acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on five acres of land.
