A loan of $650 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Mechimeru A Group's story

Meltus is pictured on the right with his hand raised amongst his Mechimeru A Group members. The ten of them, five women and five men, are farmers in Bungoma South District. Farming inputs will be delivered to him on credit consisting of the necessary materials to plant ½ acre of maize, millet, and sorghum. Meltus first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2010 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Meltus joined One Acre Fund in order to improve his farming techniques with One Acre Fund methods and access the best input prices.

Meltus reports that before One Acre Fund, he was able to grow about 4 bags of maize per ½ acre, but with his One Acre Fund input loan during Long Rains 2012, he harvested 9.5 bags per 1/2 acre! He hopes that his profits from the 2013 Long Rains season can be used to send his children to school and perhaps invest in another business. During the 2013 Long Rains season, each group member will receive ½ an acre of agricultural inputs on credit. Meltus‘ group will receive 5 acres worth of inputs on credit.
