A loan of $650 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize and sorghum.


Mabuusi Group's story

Alice’s group has 10 farmers and is located in Bungoma South District. Alice is pictured on the right of Mabuusi Group with her hand raised. Alice is pictured amongst the one man and nine women of her group. She will receive loans to enable the planting of ½ an acre with sorghum and maize. Alice first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2011 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Alice joined One Acre Fund in order to gain access to hybrid seed and fertilizer as well as to improve her farming techniques with One Acre Fund methods.

Prior to joining One Acre Fund, Alice was only able to harvest 6 bags of maize per ½ acre, but after joining One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2012, she was able to harvest 9 bags per ½ acre! She plans on using future profits from the harvest to send her children to school and save for the future. During the 2013 Long Rains season, each group member will receive ½ an acre of agricultural inputs on credit. Alice’s group will receive 5 acres worth of inputs on credit.
