A loan of $650 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Mufule Group's story

Patrick is pictured on the right with his hand raised, amongst his Mufule Group members. There are five women and five men in the group, and they are all farmers in Bungoma South District. Farming inputs, such as seed and fertilizer, will be delivered to him on credit to plant half an acre of maize, millet, and sorghum. Patrick first enrolled with One Acre Fund (OAF) during the 2011 Long Rains, and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Patrick joined OAF to improve his farming techniques with their methods, and to access the best input prices.

Patrick says that before One Acre Fund he was able to grow about 3/4 bag of maize per half acre, but with his OAF loan during Long Rains 2012, he managed to harvest 9 bags per half acre! He hopes that his profits from the 2013 Long Rains season can be used to send his children to school, and perhaps invest in a goat. During the 2013 Long Rains season, each group member will receive half an acre of agricultural inputs on credit, so Patrick‘s group will receive 5 acres worth of inputs in total.
